“Lithium” – Nirvana – “Nevermind” (1991)

Apr 25

It’s technically Cover Day on Play On Daily although this technically isn’t a cover. I had to post this though in its imperfect, phone cam, paying patron form. Sometimes all of the editing that you would get (or like I will get when HBO cleans up the induction ceremonies and airs it in a few weeks) is kind of a barrier keeping you from feeling what it’s like to be at the show. I love Annie Clark though and Nirvana is in my personal hall of fame so take a look. Happy Friday night!

Did you know that there’s lithium in San Pellegrino? The fun stuff that I learn while attending dinner parties with people way smarter than myself.

Just drop the needle anywhere on this record. It’s good throughout. It rocks, hard and gently. I never read enough of the stories to figure out what the deal was with their little hiatus but it seems to be all good now. I’m building my play list, fixing to ship out, this one might make the cut.

If you didn’t have any real, pressing needs, and you had closets and a two car garage full of wants, what would you do with, let’s say, $1,000 if it just fell out of the sky and almost knocked your triple vente decaf over? Another pair of skis to replace the ones that you’ve used three times in the last four years? A campaign contribution for your favorite congressmen or congresswoman hopeful? A bigger sun umbrella to protect your defenseless cup o’ joe?

Quick somebody name a better, living, breathing, in-their-prime, rock and roll band at this very moment. Better than the Black Keys? Anybody?

I was sitting in the dentist’s chair looking out at a pleasant, Seattle spring day when I noticed that they were tuned into the classic rock Sirius 70’s channel. A lot of great rock and roll got added in those ten years.

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it’s better than drinking alone

“Seasons (Waiting On You)” – Future Islands – “Singles” (2014)

About three years ago, I spent a good two or three weeks being in awe of “Walking Through That Door.” It was that perfect blend of expectant, hopeful, about ready to be crushed or levitated that makes for a great 4+ minutes of pop music. It kind of began and ended with that song, for me, for Future Islands. For as much as I loved that one song, I could hardly even listen to anything else. I wanted to love everything about them, I really did. I wanted to go to their show at The Crocodile and have them win me over but I over played that one song and kind of moved on.

They’re back (they actually never left it was just me being fickle) and I’ve got to tell you there’s a bunch of stuff on their new record that I dig. Samuel T. Herring has got a nice tone and kind of makes me think he’s a mix of Roland Gift + Richard Butler of The Psychedelic Furs.

“Nobody ‘Cept You” – 16 Horsepower – “Secret South” (2000)

Aww, that nice long pull off of the first Friday evening beer, ain’t it just the best?

I’m trying to get back on the schedule that I rolled out around New Year’s. So this is Cover Day. I started off jonesin’ for a little Elvis Costello then got distracted and went down the Robert Allen Zimmerman aka Bob Dylan aisle. It’s one of those aisles that you could stuck on for quite a piece of time. There are knockoff/covers a-plenty. What to choose?

When I finally settled on this song re-done by 16 Horsepower, I almost ended off task again. The whole of “Secret South” is this kind of hard fought, rough, resentful, full throated collection that kind of just draws you in. You take the second, third, and sixth drink of that first coldie and pretty soon you’re like “who’s Robert Zimmerman again?” “Burning Bush” has got me to wondering what I’ve got in the liquor cabinet.

Happy second beer of the weekend and beyond…

I’m all about bad ass duos. If I’m playing the numbers game, I’ll take a twosome over a quartet, quintet, trio, or any other (insert digit)tet. I’m still not super familiar with Wye Oak but I like everything that I’ve heard so far.

I’ve never posted these guys before. Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan but I heard this song on the radio today and it fit just right at that moment. I listened to the whole album tonight and came away with kind of a friend zone type of like but I’m not sure that we have a meaningful future together. That might have been a little rash, maybe we should go out on a second date.
