“We Got to Have Peace” – Curtis Mayfield – “Roots” (1971)

I would settle for some form of eight million different people groups not wishing and enacting hateful shit on each other and maybe just ignoring each other for a year, or maybe, a decade or two. Most every little kid gets told to play nice but what we really stow away in our memory banks and save for a rainy adult day is “remember that time when the those 5th graders gave ‘Little Johnny 4th Grader’ a wedgie and threw his backpack on the roof of the portable.” If we forgot about that part, it’s only because Johnny’s 6th grade sister swooped in and cracked a couple of 4th grade heads. It was all about the naked agression and the iron fisted retribution… and then god gave us Curtis Mayfield, and god taketh away.

“Perfectly Lonely” – John Mayer – “Battle Studies” (2009)

I don’t always dig me some John Mayer but when I do, I need that perfect balance of him jammin’ out on the guitar and belting out some faded or wilted romantic aspirations. This one really grooves with lots of bluesy guitar licks throughout.

I was so sleepy today, downright groggy for hours and hours and I still am. I couldn’t figure it out at first. I slept good last night. It wasn’t a particularly tough or traumatic day. On my way out to the parking lot to head for home, I think I figured it out.

Unrelenting gray accompanied by the physical element of lashing rain showers had something to do with Captain Sleepy Face, I think. The weather did me in today and guaranteed that I’ll be keeping old geezer hours to ring in the weekend. My next thought was that I can never live in Seattle again. I love it there but I feel like if I relocate back to the hometown, I will get a permanent pair of those funky Ben Carson eyes that look like they are constantly trying to reboot.

Or Winnipeg, I don’t think I can pitch a tent in Winnipeg.

“The Golden State” – City and Colour – “The Hurry and The Harm” (2013)

Mr. Green’s tone is nothing if not wistful so what’s up with the ironic lyrics. “Me not smart enough to solve puzzle.” To walk it back for a sec, the man always brings vulnerability to his art so there’s that.

I so love City and Colour. I always assume that artists might hate comparisons, especially if you lump them in with someone they happen to hate, but with City and Colour I get heavy Ray LaMontagne notes with a hint of Citizen Cope.

“Wichita Lineman” – Glen Campbell – “Wichita Lineman” (1968)

This post inspired by the fantastic Basement Vinyls show on Radio K (KUOM) via the University of Minnesota. If you haven’t checked out the show yet and are looking for a way to activate some dormant memories, tune in on Monday nights.

“Wichita Lineman” plays like fine art photography overlaid on an American music icon at his best.

I wish I still had all of my pre-teen to mid-teen vinyl. What did it consist of? There was: The Spinners, Kiss, The Four Seasons, The Manhattans, The Eagles, (yup) Bay City Rollers, Earth, Wind and Fire; and definitely some Chic. And then, there was all of that good stuff in the juke box at the restaurant that our folks owned.

What do people want anyways? We all walk around going to where ever we are going but what are we going to do once we get there and where is the ultimate place that we are trying to go anyways? Do we want abstract stuff like… enlightenment, self-actualization? Shiny stuff like: granite counter tops, and prime grade ribeyes (I guess steaks aren’t really shiny per se)? And will we know when we get there “wow, I have been looking for the meaning of life and now I have this pile of awesome granite for as far as the eye can see? What do people want? What do I want?

I’m hungry.
