“Some Riot” – Elbow – “The Seldom Seen Kid” (2008)

I methodically check the touring status of Elbow several times per week. They’ve still only announced European dates as well as Australia and Austin City Limits but I’m confident that more US dates will be added for fall and/or winter.

“Some Riot” is an epic tragedy of a song – not least because the only people who have ever heard it are Elbow fans with the general music listening public virtually unaware of its existence – full of ominous words and pulsating strings portending a terrible conclusion to a cautionary tale. There is no chorus, just a verse, and super verse spilling words of regret and helplessness.

A lot of us have lost someone who lost everything due to their vices. Too often those losses get romanticized to the point where some of us, the more impressionable, think it might not be the worst road to take. “Some Riot’s” outro puts shivers down my spine – partly because of the brilliance of Guy Garvey and his band mates but mostly due to thoughts of those, the dearly departed.

A friend of mine grows his very own brambles
They twist all around him ’til he can’t move
Beautiful, quivering, chivalrous shambles
What is my friend trying to prove?

The booze turns a tall, gentle boy to a terrible totem
And the kids gather round trying to see what’s inside
I think when he’s drinking he’s drowning some riot
What is my friend trying to hide?
Cause it’s breaking my heart, it’s breaking my heart
And it’s breaking my heart to pour like the rain
Brother of mine, don’t run with those fuckers
When will my friend start singing again?
When will my friend start singing again?

Are we having the time of our life?
Are we having the time of our lives?
Are we coming across clear?
Are we coming across fine?
Are we part of the plan here?

What active band that you haven’t seen before, do you have at the top of your list as a must-see?
Who is one of the best bands in the world that virtually no one in the US knows exist?

Elbow is one of those bands that I sometimes feel like posting day after day for a couple or three weeks in a row. If you’ve never heard an Elbow song before, I suggest that you not even think about listening to just one song, and instead take an hour or so and listen to an entire album. I’m sure that the band wouldn’t discourage you from just listening to one track if that’s all you have time for, but Elbow’s albums just sound like they were built to listen to from start to finish.

Who else thinks that lead man Guy Garvey remind you a little of Fish from Marillion?
When they say the new album will be out in early 2011, just what do they mean by early?

Are we having the time of our lives?
