A Few Favorites

KEXP is in the midst of counting down the Top 500 Songs of All Time as voted on the KEXP community. I didn’t have my stuff together enough to get in a vote or two but I was thinking this morning, as I was listening to John Richards, what my favorite songs of all time are. Just off of the top of my head, here are a few (I wonder if any of them will show up on the list):

– “Fake Plastic Trees” – Radiohead – Despondently touching
– “Ghosts” – The Head and the Heart — Listen to the album, you’ll dig it. Listen to The Head and the Heart play it live, you’ll love it.
– “Crazy” – Patsy Cline – You all know it, most likely you all agree with me.
– “Racin’ in the Streets” – Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – I love Bruce and the live version of this song on the 1975-1985 fiv album set is great.
– “Rearview Mirror – Pearl Jam – My favorite PJ song, not named Yellow Ledbetter
– “Closer” – Nine Inch Nails – Trent at his nihilistic best… or worst.
– “Photograph – Def Lepard – Don’t look at me like that, at least I didn’t say “Pour Some Sugar on Me”
– “911 is a Joke” – Public Enemy – “Fear of a Black Planet” has got to be one of the best albums ever.
– “Hey Jude” – The Beatles – This morning when I was on the bus, I was thinking that I need to read a good book on The Beatles, or a Beatle. Any suggestions?
– Oliver’s Army – Elvis Costello – Tough to pick which Elvis song is the best but this one will do for now.
– “Wuthering Heights” – Kate Bush – It seems like someone way smarter than me could constuct an impenetrable thesis stating that this is the best performance ever by a female vocalist and possibly any vocalist.
– “Love is Stranger Than Death” – The The – Astonishingly good

Songs 500 to 325 (actually they have some bonus picks, so it’s 540-325) are now posted on KEXP’s website. Time to peruse the list and see if any of my songs show up…

There it is, “Closer” at # 399.

“Closer” – Nine Inch Nails – “The Downward Spiral” (1994)

“What I Have to Offer” – Eels – “Tomorrow Morning” (2010)

Well, to be totally honest, there are one maybe two things that Mr. E doesn’t care about that I care about…. I care a lot about the things that E doesn’t care about. Still, it makes no difference. I really love this little, melancholy number. Nothing too fancy, it’s just kind of sweet, simple, and really, kind of mushy but in a steel cut kind of way.

“Bewitched” – The Wedding Present – “Bizarro” (1989)

If it’s nice and summery in your neck of the woods, download this late 80’s rocker and take a nice leisurely drive with the windows down and the volume up. The slow fade out transitioning to blow-doors-off loud moment at 4:35 in is epic. I guarantee that you’ll play this one at least a couple of times and download a bunch more of The Wedding Present’s collection before you put it to bed for the night.
